Microsoft Mahjong (formerly Mahjong Titans, Shanghai Solitaire and Taipei) is a computer game of mahjong solitaire published by Xbox Game Studios (previously by Microsoft).

Overview[]

The object of the game is to remove all the tiles from the board. To do this, match two tiles with the same design by clicking them. You may only select a tile if there is no other tile covering it, and at least one of its sides does not have a tile next to it.

As stated in the Windows Vista Help and Support article Learn about Windows games, Mahjong Titans is, despite its name, not based on the ancient game of mahjong solitaire, but rather shanghai solitaire, which uses similar tiles.

History[]

The version titled Mahjong Titans was developed by Oberon Games and is included in Windows Vista and Windows 7 (except Starter and Home Basic editions). It takes advantage of the new graphical user interface (GUI) of Windows Vista, and includes features such as tile set and background choices. In Windows Vista builds 5219 up to 5259, the game was known as Shanghai Solitaire.

Windows 8 did not include the game; however, a standalone version, developed by Arkadium and published by Microsoft Studios, can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store free of charge and played without download on the web.

An older version of the game was known as Taipei and was bundled in Microsoft Entertainment Pack 1 and The Best of Microsoft Entertainment Pack.
