History[]
On November 1, 1999, Microsoft (MSFT) and Intel (INTC) became the first corporate stocks from NASDAQ to become components of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. They, along with AT&T Corporation and The Home Depot, displaced older members Chevron Corporation, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Sears, and Union Carbide from the index.[1] Microsoft has since become one of the largest companies in the world, based on market capitalization.[2] On June 22, 2021, Microsoft became the 2nd American company after Apple Inc., and the 3rd in the world, to reach a market valuation of US$2 trillion.[3] Microsoft and Apple are known to regularly trade places as the most valuable company in the world.[4]

The stock has split nine times since Microsoft went public on March 13, 1986 at $21 per share. Each share had split 288-fold since the initial public offering and would have been worth over $30,000 by November 2018.[5][6]
