Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0

Microsoft Internet Explorer 2 (IE2) is the second version of the Internet Explorer (IE) series of graphical web browsers developed by Microsoft. It was unveiled in October 1995 and released for Windows on November 27, 1995, and for Apple Macintosh on April 23, 1996.

IE2 was available for Windows 3.1x, Windows NT 3.1, Windows NT 3.5, Windows 3.51, and Windows 95; and it was available for System 7 and Mac OS 8. It is the last version of Internet Explorer to support Windows NT 3.1.

IE2 is no longer supported and is not available to download from Microsoft.

History[]

IE replicated many features of Netscape Navigator, and allowed the importing of bookmarks from it. In May 1996, FTP Softare announced it was providing Microsoft with various technologies for IE2, including a PPP network, a 16-bit email client, and other features.

IE2 introduced new or improved features for its time. Many became ubiquitous (such as HTTP cookies) while others such as the integrated email client were removed in later versions due to being out of scope and better covered by dedicated software like Outlook. The features are:
