Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) is the eleventh and final version of the Internet Explorer web browser for Windows. Released by Microsoft on October 17, 2013, IE11 was included in the release of Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2, and was released for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 on November 7, 2013. It is the successor to Internet Explorer 10, released the previous year, and was the original, default browser in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 prior to Microsoft Edge's introduction. IE11 was also included in the release of Windows 10 on July 29, 2015, as well as Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2019. Like its predecessor, IE11 is not available for Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 and earlier versions of Windows.
For select editions of Windows 10, including the retail version found on many home computers, Internet Explorer 11 is no longer supported as of June 15, 2022.[1] IE11 is not supported at all under Windows 11.[2]
IE Mode, a feature of Microsoft Edge, enables Edge to display web pages using Internet Explorer 11's Trident layout engine and other core components.[3] Through IE Mode, the underlying technology of Internet Explorer 11 partially exists on versions of Windows that do not support IE11 as a proper application, including Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022.[4] Microsoft has announced support for IE Mode through at least 2029, with a one year advance notice prior to retiring this variant of IE11.[2]
Changes[]
IE11 features redesigned developer tools, support for WebGL, enhanced scaling for high DPI screen, prerender, and prefetch. IE11 has Windows 8.1 exclusive SPDY protocol support. In addition, IE11 supports Full Screen and Orientation APIs, CSS border image support, JavaScript enhancements, DOM mutation observers, Web Cryptography API, video text track support, encrypted media support and an enhanced HTML editor. IE11 now uses TLS 1.2 as the default protocol for secure connections and deprecates RC4 cipher suite.
Internet Explorer 11 for Windows RT does not support Java or other add-ons.
Removed features[]
- IE11 has deprecated
document.all
, meaning that code that checks for its presence will not detect it, but code that actually uses it will continue to work. - The
attachEvent
proprietary API has been removed. - Quick Tabs (Ctrl + Q)
- Work Offline command removed from File Menu
- Drag and drop of selected content from IE to other programs like Microsoft Word or WordPad.
Deprecation[]
Microsoft Edge was originally released in July 2015 as the eventual replacement for Internet Explorer. This first version of Edge (now known as Edge Legacy) used EdgeHTML, a fork of the MSHTML (Trident) browser engine from Internet Explorer for backward compatibility. However, MSHTML was found to be vulnerable to cyberattacks.[5][6] In 2018, Edge transitioned to a new Chromium-based browser engine that did not work with websites that specifically required Internet Explorer, though Windows 10 continued to support the use of both Edge and Internet Explorer.[2] On June 15, 2022, support for Explorer ended, with most remaining users (less than 2%) simply being redirected to Edge.[7]
Legacy support[]
Windows 11 does not include support for Internet Explorer 11 by default. A procedure was found to re-enable it, though it was acknowledged that Explorer is no longer suitable for present-day use due to lack of security and inability to access modern cloud services like Microsoft 365 and Teams.[8][9]
Microsoft recommends that Windows 10 and 11 users switch to the newer Microsoft Edge browser based on the Chromium engine for improved privacy and security.[10] For legacy sites that can only function with the Internet Explorer browser, Edge users can enable "Internet Explorer mode" (IE mode) to switch from Chromium to the MSHTML engine to handle such circumstances.[3] Microsoft stated that this feature would be supported in Edge until at least 2029.[2]
