EdgeHTML is a browser engine that was developed by Microsoft for use in the original verion of Microsoft Edge that was released with Windows 10 in 2015. It is a fork of MSHTML (also known as Trident), the proprietary browser engine that had been used in Internet Explorer since version 4 in 1997. However, EdgeHTML became unsupported as of March 9, 2021.
History[]
Discontinuation[]
Between 2018 and 2021, Microsoft transitioned to an open source browser engine from Chromium for the current version of Microsoft Edge. The older MSHTML-based version of Edge was renamed Edge Legacy, for which support ended on March 9, 2021.[1] For legacy websites that only function with older MSHTML-based browsers, the newer version of Edge includes an "Internet Explorer mode" (IE mode) to switch from Chromium to the MSHTML engine.[2] Microsoft stated that this feature would be supported in Edge until at least 2029.[3]
