The Dreamcast (ドリームキャスト, Dorīmukyasuto) is a home video game console that was released in Japan in November 1998 and in North America in September 1999. It is the final home video game system from Sega, and was developed in collaboration with Microsoft before the launch of the first Xbox console in November 2001.[1]

Microsoft technology[]

The Dreamcast runs a modified version of Windows CE and uses DirectX as its graphics engine.[2]

Before the Dreamcast was discontinued in March 2001, Sega chairman Isao Okawa wanted the upcoming Xbox to be backwards compatible with Dreamcast games. He met with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, but was unable to reach a deal.[3] Games in Sega's Dreamcast Collection needed to be conventionally ported to work on the Xbox 360 and Windows XP.[4]
