Gameplay[]
Chess Titans is a chess game based on standard rules, including an 8x8 playing board and sixteen pieces given to each of two players. The game can be played using either a mouse or Xbox 360 controller for Windows.
Rules[]
Each of the two players receives sixteen pieces. Those sixteen pieces are each colored White or Black, depending on which player they belong to. Players take turns each moving one piece at a time; the player of White makes the first move.
Each type of piece moves in a specific manner. A piece can land on the same spot as one of the other player’s pieces, which will “capture” that player’s piece, removing it from the game. For each player, the pieces consist of:
- 8 pawns, each placed along the second-closest row from its player’s perspective. Pawns can only move one square forward at a time. However, each pawn that has not moved before has the option to move two squares forward. Additionally, a pawn can move one square diagonally forward if there is an enemy piece in that spot. However, a pawn cannot move straight forward at all if a piece is in the way. If a pawn reaches the opposite end of the board, it changes into another type of piece of the player’s choice (rook, bishop, knight, or queen).
- 2 rooks, each placed at the corners of the board. Rooks can move any number of squares up, down, left, or right as long as there are no pieces in the way.
- 2 bishops, each placed next to either the queen or the king. Bishops can move any number of squares in any of four diagonal directions, as long as there are no pieces in the way.
- 2 knights, each placed between a rook and a bishop. Knights can move in any of up to eight spots which are two squares away and skewed sideways by one square (moving in a way akin to an “L” shape). Pieces between Knights and their available squares do not block the Knight’s ability to move.
- 1 queen, placed at the bottom center from its player’s perspective. Queens can move any number of squares in any straight vertical, horizontal, or diagonal direction as long as there are no pieces in the way.
- 1 king, placed at the bottom center from its player’s perspective. The objective of the game is to capture the King of the other player by moving one of your pieces so that the other player’s king is in the piece’s path, while also making sure their King is unable to be moved to be safe from the path of your pieces. Kings themselves can move one square at a time in any of eight directions, and can capture any enemy piece which is directly next to them.
Player vs. Computer[]
Players can play against the computer after selecting the computer skill in a scale from 1 to 10. After a move is made by the computer, the player can view the last move. When clicking on a chess piece, Chess Titans shows all possibilities for that move, which helps the player in playing Chess. This option can also be turned off.
Player vs. Player[]
In a 2-player game, the chess board automatically turns 180 degrees, after each player has made their respective move. Chess Titans saves all scores of 2-player games.
