Bradford Lee Smith is an attorney who is serving as the current president and vice chairman of Microsoft.
Early life and education[]
Smith grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin, near Green Bay. Smith was admitted to Princeton University, where he met his future wife Kathy and graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in 1981. He received his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1985.[1]
Career[]
In September 1985, Smith began working as a law clerk for Judge Charles Miller Metzner at the U.S. Federal Court for the Southern District of New York and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1986. He then joined the law firm of Covington & Burling, becoming the first attorney there to have a computer on their desk. Smith has also been a member of the board of directors of Netflix since June 2015.[1]

Smith joined Microsoft in November 1993 as associate general counsel of its European operations in Paris, France. He returned to Redmond, Washington in August 1996 as deputy general counsel of worldwide sales. In July 2002, he became executive VP and general counsel of corporate affairs, handling antitrust actions from the U.S. government. In September 2015, he was appointed to his current position as president and chief legal officer of the Microsoft Corporation.[1]
