Microsoft Azure, also referred to simply as "Azure", is a cloud computing platform developed by Microsoft and publicly launched on February 1, 2010.

Product history[]

The platform was first previewed to developers as Windows Azure on October 27, 2008. It allows web applications to be hosted from Microsoft's data centers.[1] Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella described Azure as the "world's computer".[2]

On March 25, 2014, the platform was renamed to Microsoft Azure.[3] A new icon design based on the Fluent design language was introduced on May 7, 2021.[4] Azure's quarterly revenue in 2021 increased 50% over the previous year, driven by increased use during the COVID-19 pandemic, making Microsoft the second largest cloud service provider in the world.[5]
