Aptos (originally called Bierstadt) is a sans-serif typeface developed by Steve Matteson, who also designed the Segoe font family included since Windows XP and the Droid font family used in Android mobile devices. It was released in 2023 as the new default font for Microsoft Office, replacing the previously used Calibri font.
Aptos, as well as its siblings Aptos Display, Aptos Narrow, Aptos Mono (a monospace font), and Aptos Serif (serif font), are available to Microsoft 365 subscribers.
History[]
Aptos was originally named Bierstadt, after Mount Bierstadt, in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, U.S. It is based on typical Swiss fonts from the middle of the 20th century. The font was intended to evoke a sense of the Helvetica and Arial fonts. It was introduced in 2021 alongside four other Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365 fonts: Grandview, Seaford, Skeena, and Tenorite. The font was considered a potential successor to the standard Calibri, introduced in 2007.
In July 2023, Microsoft renamed the font after Aptos, California and made slight modifications.
